high five iced chai

I absolutely LOVE ice cold drinks during warmer months. This recipe might be a bit premature – after all, here in the northeast we saw the fattest snowflakes ever on the first day of Spring – but there’s always room to dream.

While I may still be starting my mornings off in full fleece pajamas, I just can’t wait any longer for iced coffee. It’s time. To make the brisk, chill of the beverage a bit tastier and complex, we’re adding in a little chai action.

Chai tea provides a delicious treat of spicy + sweet, while a dose of fully leaded coffee slaps you a high five to keep your day energized.

The cherry on top of all this is the guest appearance of a beautiful vintage glass pitcher from The Haven Collective. Visit the gorgeous shop in New Haven for this and many other perfectly curated products, clothing, and accessories from yesteryears. The shop is also home to craft classes and pop up markets. Heck, make a cup of High Five Iced Chai, jump in your car, and make a day of it!

serves 2 – 4

4 c boiling water

10 bags Tazo chai tea

1/2 – 3/4 c coffee grounds, depending on taste

1 Tbl raw honey

heavy cream

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a kettle. Transfer to a pot and add raw honey. Stir until fully dissolved.

Steep all ten Tazo chai tea bags in the hot water for 20 minutes. (I love watching tea steep. The evolution of color saturation is mesmerizing.)

While the tea steeps, prepare your french press. Add your desired amount of coffee grounds. The more you use, the stronger the coffee.

NOTE: If you don’t have a french press, you can use sealable tupperware. You’ll need a cheesecloth the following day when you are ready to strain out the coffee grinds.

Remove tea bags from the brewed pot before transferring to the french press. Carefully pour over coffee.

Give it a good stir.

Place the lid on, but DO NOT press lever down. Chill in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight.

When ready, slowly press down the top. Serve over ice. Remember, the tea was sweetened during the steeping phase, so check the potency before adding in more.

Looky there! That's a super cute vintage teak + glass pitcher, available for sale through The Haven Collective. What a stunning conversation starter!

Oh, don’t forget to try out a little cream in your beverage. Holy moly, that’s a sexy sight!
